Scientific Proof of Eucharistic Miracles: Possible or Impossible?
One of the most important questions related to Eucharistic miracles is: Can science prove supernatural events?
The short answer: No, not directly.
The long answer: Science cannot prove the supernatural event itself, but it can document unexplained physical phenomena.
What science has documented about Lanciano: 1. The flesh is human heart tissue 2. The blood is human with blood type AB 3. No preservatives are detectable 4. The samples show unexplained preservation
What science CANNOT say: 1. That God caused the event 2. That transubstantiation occurred 3. That supernatural forces were at work
The reason: Science works with natural phenomena. It cannot test or measure the existence of supernatural phenomena.
This does not mean that supernatural events do not occur. It simply means they fall outside the scientific framework.
For believers, the physical existence of real flesh and blood samples is sufficient proof of the miracle. For skeptics, it is simply an unexplained biological case.
In the end, both belief and disbelief are rational positions - one accepts supernatural explanations, the other rejects them.
